A report was received by the police that several Maoris living in a house at Te "Whiti, near Masterton, lighted some wood in an old tin can to warm the room, and retired to rest. In the morning »two of the number were found dead, suffocated with the fumes. Two others were carried out unconscious. Masterton, August 18. Two Maoris were found dead in a shed at Ti Whiti, a few milesfrom here, and two others are lying in a critical state through inhaling fumes of charcoal. It appears they went eel fishing on Friday, and were allowed by a settler of Gladstone road named Gresham to sleep in a cheese house with one small window. To keep themselves warm they placed a drum full of charcoal embers in a room and though warned by Gresham, said they were used to it. Yesterday the « Maoris visited the shed and discovered what had happened. One survivor is in a critical state, the other is likely to recover.
