ORDINARY MEETING.

After disposing of the special business an ordinary meeting was held, the same Councillors being present. Riwa block, stating 4;hat they would permit a road to be taken through the block if the Council would undertake to fence it. 4: The Clerk was instructed to reply, pointing out that the original understanding was that i£ the Council could obtain a road through the High Sehpol reserve, the natives would grant the road through their land. MANGAKAHIA TELEPHONE. Mr J. Hunter wrote enclosing a letter from the Commissioner of Telegraphs, andasking the co-operation of the Council. The enclosure ■ stated that the Department could not under take to connect Poroti and Mangakahia by telephone unless the County Council would guarantee a subsidy of £26 annually to cover possible .deficiency. The practice has been for the Council to guarantee^a subsidy to the Government, and to $§§e.pt the guarantees of settlers interested.^n^^jl^@B ; to coyer any deficiency it" loightl be called upon to make good; In' reply' to the Chairman the Clerk said that he had not been able to, collect money due from guarantors on account .of the Poroti line. The Council decided that in consequence of the unsatisfactory manner in which similar transactions had turned out, and of the extra work entailed on the oflice, it could not see its way to enter into the required guarantee. MERGING, A ROAD DISTRICT. Mr A. 'II. Mason wrote that owing 1 to the absence of several ratepayers of the Kejisiugton- Road District, he had not yefc completeT "the" petition to merge that district in the County.
