The Bay of Islands Seat.
«. ME HOUSTON, THE GOYT. LIBERAL CANDIDATE. THE PREMIER SPEAKS OF HIS POLITICAL WORTH. THE GUM TIiADE. PEO POSED LEGISLATION TO REGULATE THE TRADE. LAND TO BE SET ASIDE FOE GUMDIGGrEKS. With a view of ascertaining clearly what position the Government intended to take in connection with the Bay election, we wired the Premier and the following wire received in reply is very conclusive and emphatic : — " Gr. Alderton, Esq., "Wliangarei. Thanks for telegram. In reply to ( your enquires re Houston : He is the approved Government candidate, and I shall be very much disappointed if he is not re-elected, seeing lie has proved himself a most capable representative and he rendered very valuable assistance in regard to Native legislation, particularly in regard to the rating of Native lands and the acquisition of Native land, and next I shall like to have his assistance in framing the necessary legislation for regulatingtheguin trade and ameliorating the condition of the gumdiggers. Land, in my opinion, should be set aside specially for homes for this very deserving class of colonists. In the matter of detail Mr Houston's assistance would be invaluable. He is well respected by parties on boih sides of the House, and deserves to be again returned. Best wishes. R. J. Seddon. Piilmestou, Nov. 21, 1893."
