GOVERNMENT SLEEPER CONTRACTS.
The quality of the sleepers being sent here from the South for the Hikui-angi Railway has been the most engrossing public topic for days past. The matter is a public scandal. We are assured by one of the most competent judges in the district that the worst of the condemned sleepers of Jackson's supply were better than the best of the Southern trash, and it is also authortatively- stated that the Southern sleepers are costing 4/ each landed on the works — a price at which the best puriri sleepers could be supplied locally. Someone is at
fault over this matter, and in justice to the tenderers, of this district, the Government should at once get at the bottom of this scandaL
