[Br Telegha.pu.] Auckland, Friday. A butchers shop in Ponsonby has been entered by burglars who stole a cash box cdntairihig sdirie doppera and a gdld brdoch. The box contained nothing else but pipers. On Wednesday, "William Tereker Bindon, & settler at Kohdkohu, filed hid petition to be adjudged a bankrupt. At the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Mr Justice Connolly refused an application from Louis" Bright in reference to his claim for a reduction of stamp duty payable upon the transfer of a block of land at Pakiri. Mr James McG-owan has been returned unopposed for the Thames seat. The contest betwe&n MessHd dayman arid Rees is being watched with great interest. Peeling is in favour of the ex-Native Minister. At the Police Court, two young men named James Glover and Henry Smith were charged with having on the 12th of July unlawfully and violently assaulted one Arthur Cottle and with robbing him of the sum of £5. Both were remanded for a week. Two lads named Charles Carter and James McNair, charged with having assaulted a Chinaman, were fined 40/ and costs or fourteen days with hard labour. Mr O'Meagher asked on behalf of McNair that his fine be raised to £5 1/, so that he would have power to appeal to the Supreme Court, and this was granted. The New Zealand football team beat combined Bathurst Representatives by 24 points to 5. m The City Council intend to discontinue payments for reporting measles to bring on a test case.
