THE MANAIA RACES
The annual meeting in connection with the Manaia Racing Club was held at Parua Bay on Thursday last" There ware about 250 people on the course, a large number having ridden from Whangarei. Very little betting was done, and but little interest seemed to be taken in the different events. Mr Loram had a liquor booth erected, and seemed to do a large trade during the day. Mr H. Culpan officiated— the capacity of judge, Mr S. Dickey as starter* The following are the particulars of the different events : — Maiden Hurdle Raceoi— sovs. Distance, 1£ miles, over 6 flights of hurdles 3ft. fiin. high, weight 10 stone, for horses the bowa. fidk property of residents in the Portia and Whangarei Heads Highway District for at least six months prior to the meeting. Entrance, 5/. G. M. Miller's Nell ".. .. 1 G. M. Miller's Merrygold . . . . 2 — Stuart's Mormonite . . . . 3 All the horses ran round the first hurdle and each were brought back. Merrygold was first over and kept the lead for a nule and then ran off agaiu. Quintal came along with Nell and as he managed to keep her on the course she won easily. Mormonite was never in the race. Open Handicap ' JSurdles of — ■ soys. Distance 2 miles, over 8 flights of hurdles. Nomination, 5/. Acceptance, 3/. R. W" McKenzie's Grenadier lOst 21bs . . 1 D..M. MoLeod's Speculation lOst 41bs .. .' 2 P. S. Brown's Don Carlos list . . 3 Ross's Adventure and William's Bismark also ran. Adventure made all the running and led for the first mile. Striking the hurdle at this stage and knocking it down Speculation and Don Carlos passed him. Grenadier then forged ahead and collared all the other horses, winning easily by 4 lengths, Don Carlos a good third. Open Maiden Race of — soys. Distance 1 mile. Weight for age. For aU horses that have never iron public money. Entrance 5/. J. Wyatt's Prince 9st 21bs .. .. 1 J. McLeod's Una 7st 21bs .. .. 2 G. M.;Mfflerß Nell Bst lllbs . . . . 3 P. S. Brown's Euchre, 7st 131bs, William's Koran, Bst 131bs, J. Robin's Nellie Bst 131 b, P. William's Whalebone Bat 131bs also ran. Una made the running and was not headed till the last quarter of a mile. Prince was not pushed and When asked won hard held by half a length. Time, 2 minutes. A protest was lodged on the ground that Prince was not entered by the advertised time. Hurry Scurry. Distance, 1 mile. Entrance, 5/. Catch weights. Blossom . . .. 1 Blue Peter .. .. 2 Bismark . . .. 3 Dyspepsia, Tipo, and Wire Nail also ran. Won by half a length. A poor third. After the first, mile Tapuwae while running very strong bolted ofi the course and was not presevered with. Prince and Speculation ran very evenly, the former winning by a short head. Totara was a good third. Time, 3min 3£ seconds. Pony Race of — soys. Distance, 1 mile. Top weight, 9 stone; 71bs. allowed for ; every inch under the 14 hands standard. Same qualification as Maiden Hurdles. Entrance, 6/. G. Robinson's Buttercup Bat ■.. .. 1 W. Beasley's Black Prince Bstr .. .. 2 H. Stuart's Trenton 9st . . 3 G. Ross's Mignonette 9st also ran. Trenton was made favourite, but contrary to expectation was beaten easily byßutttercup and Black Prince. Time 2 mm. 10 seconds. Settlers 1 Race of — soys. Distance, 1£ miles. Weight, lOst. 101 b. Same qualification as to ownership as Maiden Hurdle Race. Entrance, 6/. A. Stuart's Totara ■.'.-, . . ,1 H. Stuart's Mormonite .. ' .. 2 , J. Rosa's Adventure . . . . 3 William's Whalebone also ran but bolted off the course. Totara won easily by 2 lengths, Adventure a poorthird. Time3min 17£ secends. Consolation Race. Distance, 1 mile, for all beaten horses. Entrance, 4/. D. M. Mclieod's Speculation . . . . ] This was a walk oyer, no other horses Having entered. .
