PUBLIC MEETING.

A public meeting, convened by the Chairman of the Whangarei Town Board, was held at' the Public Hall on Wednesday afternoon, to consider the action taken by Mr JKobert Thompson, M.H.R. iv the House recently, in asking the question which led up to what is now commonly known as the ThompsonYogel episode. Mr Street formally opened the meeting and moved that Mr Comes as Chairman of the Town Board, take the chair. Seconded by Mr McKenzie, and carried. Mr Comes then took the chair, and called on Mr Griffin to more the first resolution. Mr Griffin moved, "That this meeting is opinion that Mr Thompson deserves its hearty thanks for his independent conduct in the House, his determined opposition to the ruinous expenditure of the late Government, and especially with reference to his 'conduct towards Sir Julius Yogel." He thought that Mr Thompson deserved every encouragement from his constituents. He had gone into the House a free man, and had done his duty manfully. He had done what nearly every other member in the House was afraid of doing, inputting the question he did on the order paper, and for which he had been insulted and illused from one end of the colony to the other. He wanted Mr Thompson to know that his constituents were proud of him, and endorsed the stand he had taken. Mr Griffin also referred to Sir George Grey in eulogistic terms, and was glad to see that he had assisted Mr Thompson in the course ho had taken. Mr Robert Reyburn seconded the motion, which on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously. Mr J. D. McKenzio moved, "That a copy of the resolution be forwarded to j Mr Thompson." Sir j Julius Yogel had said in the House that Mr Thompson was the reflex of his constituents He wished Mr Thompson to know that they were proud of the name. They had a member who was a credit to the House, and they were quite agreeble to be classed with him. Mr Harden seconded the resolution l which was also carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close.
