RAILWAY FARES.
(To the Editor.)
Sib,— l think it is about time Vaije'a system, or some other system, was* brought into operation in the Whanearei district. It seems retrenchment hae nofgot this far yet. This unfortunate little railway of ours is getting so much mismanaged that very few will have anything to ;do.with it who can possibly help it. Here is one or two of their outrageous charges : I had a,- Ver y smaH pony sent here from Auckland Jast week for. virhich I paid 5/ freight per steamer to Whangarei w^arf, but for the other two miles to Whaiigarei'. I was charged by the railway the sum of B^4, or .nearly double what. the : steamer cbai^e'4 for : nearly 100 miles. A few weeks- previous lo this I had a cart sent up, for which Iwas charged 15/ freight by the shipping company ;to,thp Whangarei wharf, but bythu - 1 railway bunglars l was charged 10/ from the Wharf to Whangarei. I do not complain of the shipping charge?, but to escape the railway . system of charging ip future I will try.tOihave goods sent by sailing vessels,. when they will be ldnded at thfi wharf, and would aHvise others todp lik^\vise.— Yours, &c.
