RUATANGATA.

Oif Tuesday the annual soiree and concert, in aid of the library fund, was held in the Ruatangata East School-house. There was a large attendance, and the whole arrangements most satisfactory. The night being beautifully fine, added much to the success and enjoyment of the eatertainment. As usual, the many musical friends of Kaino and Whangarei contributed largely to the concert, which comprised the following programme : — Opening piece, piano, Mrs Cutforth ; song, "My Friend," Mr Culpan ; song, " White Wings," Mr Morgon ; recitation, " The Fireman's Wedding," Mr Wilson ; song, " Home they brought the Warrior Dead,' Miss McLeod; duet— piano and violin, Mr McNaughton and Mrs Steele ; song, "The Dotlet of My Eye," Mr \ Bessell ; song, "No Father, No Mother," Mr Tucker ; stump speech, Mr A. (Wilson; song, "Faithful Jack," Mr Culpan; song, "Far Away," Mr Rust; song, " Man the Lifeboat," Mr Bradley ; song, "The Maid of the Mill," Mr Bradley; glee, "The Carnival," the Cutforths; song, "Alone on the Raft," Mr Morgon ; song, " Yours Truly, ' Mr Bessell; duet, "The Minute Gun at Sea," Messrs Rust and Hodge. Mr Steele, the secretary to the library, read the following report: — Income for the year £24 12/10, expenditure £22 8/5 ; volumes added to the library during the year 79 ; total number now in the library 444. Subscribers during the year 34, as against 30 last year. Volumes issued during the year 1022 as against 1002 last year. This statement shows a healthy state of things, inasmuch as expenditure is within the income, the library is being added to, and the interest in the institution well sustained, as shown by the increased issue of (books. Hearty votes of /thanks were given to the singers who kindly gave their services, the ladies who presided at the tables, to Mrs Steele, whose piano wa3 placed at the service of the committee, and to Mr Street, who occupied the chair.

At the close of the concert a dance took place, which, was largely attended, and kept up until day-break, which brought to a close another annual and most pleasing gathering. .
