POSTAL ARRANGEMENTS.

Thi postal arrangements of this part of the island are of the most unsatisfactory nature, involving delays which neutralise commerce and form a barrier to all progress. It is perhaps, not generally known by other than business men that, though only about 34 1* miles from Kawakawa, letters are sent to Auckland and thence to the Bay of Islands, occupying so much time in transit, that a month passes before replies can be received. It is thought that, by withdrawing many short services along the route, that little increase in cost would be incurred in subsidising a weekly mail service by coach between Whangarei and Kawakawa, thus fostering intercourse along the whole line of road. ' The importance of this will be readily seen. A petition is being largely signed, to be presented to the postal authorities.
