FOOTBALL.
ON Friday, the. sth inst., a team selected from the Whangarei Club lfeft here on horseback to play the return match with - Kawakawa. The players started from Whangarei at B*3o on Friday, arriving at Kawakawa the same day at 6 p.m. after a very muddy ride,. Cooke. Whangarei won the toss and 'selected to kick against the wind. During the first forty minutes the game- was' very even, Kawakawa having if anything slightly the best of Lfc as Whaugaiei ,was playing fourteen men, Steaoman having to.retire disabled. During this spell one of the Kawakawa forwardrthrew the ball forward ana one nf his side got it- abd touched down, rhe Wiangarei umpire .on^whose side it was and ' who distinctly saw : it" at once gave it "no try 7 and ordered the- tall back, but for some reason the Kawakawa team jtook.a ,shpt tat^goal Tand succeeded in kicking a goal. The Whangarei Captain protested against this -score; being counted; an& 'the (game proceeded no farther score bMnfe ipftdein bhis spell. Kawakawa played a fax better game than they did when at Whsngareij and were in f ar better fettle than oti* mm_ >ln the evening about 50 fat down' to a first-class Spread at Itiddleton's hotel, and everybody throughly enjoyed themselves. The Whangarei team wish to express their heartfelt thanks, for the kindness they received everywhere (with the exception Mrtfast Number Sixty-fire), and trust that the match with Xawakawa will not be allowed to lapse. : The team left on their return and arrived home on Sunday* Well satisfied with the treatment they feesivedi Fuujjaok.
