KAMO.
(From our own Correspondent.) , At the practice of the Kamo Choral s Society, on Monday evening, it was decided to hold the first concert on the c 28th July, and I trust we shall acquit ourselves creditably on that date. The coal mine is still closed, and at present there doss not appear to be much probability of an early re-opening. 1 Messrs Bell and Tothill have been busy lately selling shares in the new company, and have, I believe, met with tolerable ■ success. ''■-'•"' 3 The School Committee here, being \ dissatisfied with the irregular attendance ] of some of the children, instructed the i constable fc> make enquiries with a view i to ascertaining .the cause, and from his report it appears that in most instances the severity of the weather was pleaded : as an excuse ; some were kept home to assist the mothers in domestic work, ' others had been duly sent to school, but • had played the truant. In all cases the ; parents promised to ensure better at- ' tendance of their children for the future. The usual monthly sale was held at , Wakelin's yard yesterday, and there was , a marked change for the better in prices, . the attendance was also good. ' I hear that Mr Dargaville is coming to visit us on Saturday. Now that Mr Alderton has had to retire from the contest it will be a battle between the former gentleman and Mr Thompson. Philos.
