PARTTA BAY.

Our little district is getting quite memorial of late. Tho Government intend to give the Kauri Mountain goldfield a test. The Minister of Mines is to pay it a visit some time during the present week. Sanguine hopes are still held out that gold -will be found in payable quantities. It is to be hoped that it vnll be found, as your correspondent can appreciate it as well as anyone. It seeuis a high shame that worthless dogs should be allowed to roam about the district in the manner in Avhich they are doing of late. Messrs Harnett and M. McDonald have had a large number of their sheep killed by them. Our friend Mr W. W. Taylor has left our midst much to the disappointment of a few. The boarding-houses seem to be doing very well, especially Mrs McDonald's, almost since hist December the house has been full. At last that most important piece of work the Awaroa Bridge i 3 to be done, it was thought once that it would not be done for some time. "Better late than never." The beach road to Whangarei will certainly be the best 'as it is " shorter and by far the best grade, and anyone travelling can get water on the way in several places which they, cannot get on the bush road, in summer tim 6 water is very acceptable. Our councillor. Mr George Ross is doing-iis ntuiOaL for our benefit, in fact he has done more for the riding than some of the former members. In fact you cannot say too much in his favour as he never thinks anything too much "trouble. Mr Sprag, of Auckland, paid the. Kauri Mountain a visit a short time since, he is a large land holder there, and it seems that some little prospecting had been done on it. He also informed me that the next holder had a misapprehension of the size of his property and part of Mr Sprag's was thought to be in it, but of course if the field is a success the land will be properly surveyed. Of late the Katikati has had a little work to do for us, a large quantityof gum has been shipped by Mr Hewett, also some by Mrs Harnett. We are making quite a stride in the building line, Mr Williams is building a large and pretty villa ; Mr ' Hewett is also about erecting a large and accommodating store, while down in Taranui it is quite a town, the din of hammers from morning to-night puts one in mind of a large city in the course of erection, but some of the hammering and noise may have been settlers chopping and sawing bush.
