GREY WATERSIDERS
Forced to Toil on King's Birthday Last week some members of thst Grey mouth WatersidV:trs' Union each i received from the local office of the . ! Labour Department a letter stat _g, j inter alia: "On Saturday, June 2nd, you wore.. warned by the Foreman that you were required to work s,s, ; > .Kai.tain.K3i-jL._o_ Liro»--- i i —* " ' ,:: *- c «»-3r r f^| Birthday. You failed to present your- I self for work on that day, and there- I by committed'a breach of Clause 16 of the Watersiders' Award, and consequently became 1-able to a penalty. My Department has considered the matter, but has decided, in this instance, to take no proceedings, but has instructed mc to warn you of the facts, and to advise that this warning is to be taken izit 0 considerat'On '"n tha ev.lnt of a future breach. I feel sure that, as the position has been pointed out, you will abide by the Award."
For 10 to 15 years no work has has ever be'en done en King's Birthday on theso wharves but apparently the patriots in the Department are determined to put an end to this condition of affairs.
We can't have too much "God Save tho King," but we can have too much leisure on his Birthday.
