A Deception
Anxious to injure the seamen, the squatter's "Dominion" the other day published the wages of seamen as just awarded and their wages as stated in the agreement dated March 1, 1920. Although it is generally known that the award reduced seamen's wages by £1/5/8 a month, the tables in the "Dominion" made it appear that the award rates were actually higher than those in the agreement. The "Dominion" deliberately deceived its readers by this means, because it must have been aware that to the rates in the agreement £1/7/- a month was added by a succession of increments. The next day the 'Dominiou" published Mr. W. T. Young's correction, but by this time, we may bo sure, the He had done ite deadly work among the ignorant and prejudiced, particularly in the country districts, where the "Dominion" largely circulates. And we may be certain that many of the Tory candidates used the lie 2i hours before the correction appeared, to dope their audiences, and that they will never attempt to undo the Impression created by this fabrication.
