A Pre-ElectSon Address

Despite tlie boisterous weather,, over 2;O0O people gathered in the Wellington Town Hall on Thursday evening 'hist to hear a pre-election address' by .Mr: H. E. Holland, M.P., leader, of the Parliamentary Labour Party. Mr. T. Brindle, chairman of the N.Z. Labour Party, presided. .

Mr. Holland's speech, which took an how and three-quarters . to deliver, iravc a vigorous exposition of the party's objective and immediate policies, and was ■enthusiastically applauded. Among the subjects dealt with were the Party's Socialist ideals, proportional representation, the referendum, housing, education, finance, the wage reductions, -land, the-right to work, insurance and banking, and the "party's, attitude on Avar and foreign policy, particularly in relation to the crisis in- Asia Minor.

At the conclusion of Mi. Holland's speech, ■Mγ. W. Kasli, secretary of the N.Z. Labour Party, appealed for the devoted service of all present in realising the principles.the Labour movement was striving for.

•Mr. J. Roberts, secretary N.Z. Alliance of Labour, moved the. following resolution: ''That this meeting thanks Mr. H. E. Holland for his able and informative address, and desires to place on record Its. appreciation of the work of the New Zealand Labour Party, under his leadership, in opposing the reactionary legislation of tho Massej' Government in its naked class bias, its attacks on the living standards of the masses of the people, its violation of the rights of tho trade union movement, and Jts cynical disregard for the principles of democracy. This meeting further affirms its conviction that the well-being of the great majority of the people of New- Zealand can only be safeguarded by the dismissal, of the Massey Government and the triumph of the Labour Party, and therefore pledges itself to give wholehearted, support to the Labour candidates in the Wellington constituencies."

Mr. J. Read, president of the Wellington -Trades and Labour Council, seconded the motion, which was carried amidst applause and cheers.
