"OUR" DEPOSITS
According to the quarterly Bank Returns published in the New Zealand Gazette,, the growth of the deposits in New Zealand Banks since 1914 is amazing. For the March quarter of that yoar the aggregate was £13,475,711, for free deposits, or current accounts; for 1919 they had risen to £24,363,681; for 1920 to £34,814,896. Fixed deposits also showed progress from £10,554,4.80 in 1914, to in 1920. The aggregate oi' both (-.oposita for liiis quarter is more iLau double that of the first, quarter of the year of the outbreak of the war. This is great and cheering news for the worker who has seen prices soar while his wages decreased, vho has had to learn the lesson of doing without, whose children have had to be pinched in their food and clothes, whcme wife has had to go out to wash to help to meet the family bills, and who lives in daily dread of being ejected from the shack a considerate State has compelled him lo call a home. Still, there is generosity In letting the workers even read about other people's wealth. One day, perhaps before long, they will show their gratitude in striking fashion. Meanwhile they can wax fat on the contemplation of the idle rich/ and commercial sharks. They can puff out their stomachs villi jirldo at '•our" prosperity.
