THE WAIHI MIXEES. A largely-attended meeting of the Miners' Union was held on. March 21, at which, after considerable discussion, It was resolved by a large majority, that the union notify the mining companies that the union is desirous of reopening the question of the seven men at present standing out of the union. Nominations to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of the president and secretary were received, and it was decided that the election be held as early as possible. The company has offered to meet the difficulty by paying the union fees and levies of the seven exempted men if the union can arrange for the names of the men to be entered on the roll of the union as a matter of form;

j A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held on March 25, Mr. T. Harle Giles, Commissioner, presiding, to consider a dispute filed by the United Plourmillers' Union against four local milling firms. The representatives for the union I were Messrs. J. Less, Theophilus i Bradley, Roderick McLeod, and Mr. O. J. Veale as advocate. The union demands were:—Hours of work: (a) When three shifts are worked, the hours asked arc 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., i p.m. to 12 midnight, and 12 midnight to 8 a.m.; (b) where two shifts are worked, the hours asked are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with one hour for dinner, and from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.; (c) where one shift is worked, S a.m. to 5 p.m. All work to cease at noon on Saturday. The wages asked are: Rollernian or shift miller, oatmeal or barley storemen and kilnmen, 1/0 per hour; purifier matter men, 1/8 per hour; other workers, 1/7* per hoar. Enginedrivers and carters to be paid iv accordance with the awards in those branches, and to have one shilling extra for night shift. The wages under the old award were respectively 1/4, 1/3J, 1/3, and 1/2 per hour. The wages asked for boys or youths are as follows: 15 to 16 years, 15/- per week; 16 to 17 years, 20/-; 17 to 18 years, 30/-; 18 to ;18 years, 40/-; and 19 to 20 years, 50/- per week.
