DEMANO FOR ONE DAY'S REST. AND OTHER MATTERS.
On November 7 the following resolution wan carried unanimously by tho Auckland Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Union, and was duly sent along to the hotel proprietors and others by Secretary Long. "That this meeting rewlroa that unless the hotel and restaurant keepers are prepared to concede the one day holiday in seven, (the sis-day week) ail hotel and restaurant employees will c<2Q!ie work on Monday next (10th inst>). In the meantime, all servants are expected to remain at their usual employment until called upon to cease \iorl; .'it IW time before jnentwn«J." Four oviit-r resolution were carried . :i3 folio ws: — 1. That tlia members of the A.if and R,E. Unicn regret t'je introductif;: or special const;!hiss as an armed fon" end beii«ve that with reason and con. moa sense a solution of the preser. industrial crisis satisfactory to all parties can be found. 2. In the event oi" the introduction of. fro© labor or special constables on tig waterfront the members of ohi.; Union d*cide to oease work at once, believing that it is incumbent upon all classes of workers to loyally stand by their felkw-workers now engaged in indu?trial warfare , , and further pledge thamselver- to assist morally an-! financially the workers already engaged in iridustrial strife. 3. "We further call upon tLe members <tl our Union to absolutely r:fusa t<, ot.ok for or serve with refreshments any special constable cr free laborer, and that in "J he event of auy hotelkeeper iusistinp on such being done, all the employees are called upon .to cease ducy forthwith. 4.. That the matter of negotiating with tie employers be left- in the hands of the executive to take what action they may deem r.eoessary. The meeting was one of the largest '.-er held. 800 being present, and mr-.'iy '.T'./re unable to g-jin admission. Their solidarity was quite remarkable ond q'jiie unexpected. When the final eontir Jeit of the' Eini';ji:«'jn workers (about 300) walked out uiul paraded the street 3. the public gave them a most cordial reception, <'heeruig them all along tLo Toute. The Trades Hall Printer;? is issuing a Strike Bulletin, which is to be a daily leaflet setting forth a true report of what is happening, as the pres3 is in reliable. This is the outcome of intense indignation among all classes of v orkers at their refusal to publish certain matters and misrepresentation of others. The Strike Bulletin is sorely needed..and-will doubtless be the means of convening large numbers of out> side.'S to the workers' cause. A prominent member of the S.D.P. has written to the "Sta*," asking the Mayor to call a public debate in the Town Hall between representatives of both sides to discuss the present situation ; then a tribunal to be set up to ctecida f>s to what action be taken m bringing; about a settlement, Needless to say, the "'Star" will not act in the matter: it would be too much like a r«ffer«iidum of the people. The idea is a capital one, and ;s an outline of what may be the role in the not distant future. The Social Democratic Party has decided to transfer its quarters from the old Socialist Party's rooms to the Trades Hall, and were to hold their first maeting th-jre on Tuesday last. A sranll office will b<? used as a library, end the meetings held in one- of "the committee rooxus. Tbis is a move in the rigkt direction, ns we will get right ia among the trade unionists, especially with the literature, and will also out down tiie expenditure by two-thitds. The I W.W. has put itself on a sound Jioancial basis by moving into smaller premises and devoting surplus cash to propaganda. The "Industrial Unionist" will therefore continue to be published.
