The writer vras pleased to witness a permanent policeman carry out his duties conscientiously to the favor of none, although ho had to run the risk of moving on some- of the "special" country bumpkins. The ' officer in charge of the traffic at the corner of the Bank of New Zealand, Willis Street, noticing that the road allotted for pedestrian traffic was blocked
by a mounted squad of irre«ponsibte baton-swingers, promptly gave them tbo order to move back ana nob bloCkk the thoroughfare. The order was reluctantly obeyed, but the officer in question was commended hy the _6y<» witnesses to the occurrence.
