A COOD AND ROUSING LETTER,
(To the Editor "Lyttelton Times.")
.Sir,—-We arc proceeding famously to llie complete Gerniauiuiuy; of New Zealand. The Liberal Government has dono a noble work for our land, and tho Reform Government is pursuing its patriotic lead I In a'short timo the ideals of the National Service League, composed of d'ukcß and earls and armament manufacturers, and heartily subscribed to by Sir Joseph Ward and his following, will Im> achieved in New Zealand, and we shall bo a people bound band and foot to the Juggernaut car of
militarism
Youths refusing to take tho oath of allegiance and obedience to the officers of tin* Imperial Army aro being fined, and the magistrate is regulating the fines according to tho dictum of the Defence Department, guided by these *amc Imperial officers. Military supervision of tho whereabouts of youths has iK-gun, and espionage of tho individual has been initiated. The Minister of Defence and Education is one and the same man, and.wo may expect the work of imbuing our children's blood witii the ardour of militarism to advance
apace,
The first court-martial lias hold its sittings, and its counsel has masqueraded in Supreme. Court robes and has passed its judgment on the military offenders, who were escorted to this democratic court .by a military guard I This is a good beginning, and bids fair to end triumphantly in our complete Lapse into mediaovalism.
IWo are no longer a free people. Our civil rights arc endangered. Tho .shackles of military enslavement are upon us,- and unless Now Zealandcrs rouso to ■their' danger our future as a nation is dark and ominous.—l am, obc., A. WELLS.,
