Manifesto.
—Of the— NEW ZEALAND SOCIALIST PARTY
! Wo. tho New Zealand Socialist Party, ; declare.' our distinctiveness, from all. 'other political' parties, inasmuch; aa wo : realise that there is existing., a* GLASS* WAR. This war arises from the inovitlablb coiillict of interest lietwocn. the ■Oauitalist-Chiss,, who conbrol tho>meansiofi tile, aaid tho iion-coutrolling-, t'roducI big-. Class.
We realise that tilic control of tho ;hi lid and tho- machinery of production jiu tho hands of the comparatively fow - places tho- ma.Li.ft nt the- grskteßt disad- ! vantage and. iitilicts the gravest injus- ' tioas. I/he- rcfsulb is. inevitably at very ' uneqjuai distribution, of wealth,, with, ) hardship- and suffering the- lot of the- ; largest proportion of wagc-carnern, 'whilst insecurity of livelihood threatens 1 a'l producers. The- Cifiiis War cam. only be. bcrntin- > a-todi by- the- ending of eont.ending class. 1 intercuts tltwig-b the establishment of ; a CoHiporativo Cinnm<i(i.wealth, in which 1 tho nie-ivns of life- Coliectivoljj owned and managed exploitation will cease-. To this, end, therefore, we- will not 'entc-r into, any endorsements, fusions,. ' bargains, or mutual' understanding's, whatsoever with, any oilier party which 'shall in any way compromise our principles,, for our determined purpose i« >to overthrow Capitalism and. abolish the wage-system ouc-o and for ever. This will bo accomplished- by the workers securing to themselves ccon'omic and political power by uniting on the industrial field into One Big Classconscious. Union, and on the political 'field into, ouo Socialist Party-—both national and international in character — ' thereby finishing, tho Claas War by the supremacy of the working-class, and the establishment of working-class ideals. 11l the meantime,, such measures, of relief as may bo forced from Capitalism will 1m? taken advantage of, but in the securing of such the Socialist Party : will always and everywhere guide itself ;by this question: Will this proposal advance the interests of tho workingclass and tho workers in their Class Struggle against Capitalism?' If it will, tfie Socialist Party is for it; iif it will not, the Socialist Party is absolutely opposed to it.
We,, the, Socialist. Party, strenuously advocate and uphold Industrial Unionism as the logical extension of Trader Unionism,, and consequently oppose compulsory arbitration and simitar legislative enactments as disadvantageous to militant and basic action, and as fostering a seeming mutuality of interest between Capitjli,-.fc and Wage-caincr— robber anil robbed—which obscures and harasses sound wot king-class organisation.
We, tho Socialist Party, aro uncompromisingly hostile to ail forms of militarism, recognising that while the Class State e X isU. the armed forces will be. used to buttress up Capitalism and to hold down the workers. We further affirm that all the energies of the workiiig-cla,ss can be most profitably utilised in building v.]) its industrial and political organisations, which shall finally render war impossible,, and which organisations, by international affiliation and alliances between the working-classes of all nations, are at. present the chief guarantee of the peace of the world.
We do not seek political office oxciM.it it be at the hands of a majority of class-conscious voters, for ours, is a revolutionary work., and Parliament as at present oon.stitut'od will be of little use !o the Industrial Democracy that we aim to establish, and it will need reorganising. Therefore, is our policy built upon basic principles, which we will not lose sight of nor deviate from. In keeping with these, we seek an immediat" extension of democratic power, and whatever government is in office we demand the Initiative, the Referendum, and Proportional Representation, with Power of Hi-call, thereby putting full and rapid power into the hands of the people.
For the Socialist Party of N.Z. E. J. HOWARD, President. F. It. COOKE, Secretary. Headquarters: Box 013, G.P.0., Christehureh.
