Conference Between Goldowners and Federation. NO SETTLEMENT. FIGHT CONTINUES. The conference between the dolegates of tho Mine-owners' Association and the Federation of Lnbor commenced at Waihi on the afternoon of June 18. Tho former was represented by Messrs. C. Rhodes (eh;tir;:i;\nl. li. P. Barry (Wailii), W.E. Evrns (Reef(oit), I). M'Arthur (Grand .Junction), H. H. Adn.nis (Aucklnnd), TT. Stansfiold and .J. M'Comhio (Karanga'-rtko). nnd J. Pryor Tho Federation representatives wore Messrs I. C Wobb R. Remplo (organiser), W. E. Parry (vioo-preyident), P. Fraser (Auckland General Laborers' Union), and G. R. Omvley (president liia.!i«:ihua Miners' Union). At tho outset tho. Federation representatives took strong exception to the press representatives being present,, but sinco tho Mine-owners insisted upon it, sooner than cause any unnecessary obstacles the point would ho waived. In reply to Mr. Somplo, Fr. Rhodes made it clear that, whatever tlio agreement between the delegate?, of thn Federation and tho association lie represented, it would have to bo a binding ono, and that at tho present he sawno other wav to effect this t'bnn through tho, medium of tho Arbitration Court. If the Federation delegates could find a way that would ho equally binding, then thoy would bo glad to consider it. Mr. Somplo asked: " Tf wo cannot submit to you soitio proposal equally binding as tho Arbitration Court, am I to lako it that you people nro goiir.; to insist, on an agreement being endorsed by tho court?" Mr. Rhodes: " Tt. has gnt. fo be tint or equally good. Wo know cf no other way, but it has got. to bo feme solid way. I don't know thai I caiv make it clearer." Mr. Romplo pat'l it was f very important point, and he would risk tho delegates to explain their reasons for de.viat'inn; from tho present system, which, lie maintained, had worked so well. Mr. Rhodes said that, Mr. Soniplo should surely know Hint I here iv.-is only ono reason, an<l thah was Hint the present agreement did not bind anybody. Tho Federation delegates then retired, and. on their rehirn, Mr. fiomplr paid that ns far as Hiey were concerned they were not gfiing to l;e parties to arbitration, and proceeded
to make a very long explanation. I Mr. Rl-;<>dep* reiterated tlie condition that th<» only binthng agreement jis far as could be scon would be under the Arbitration Act. Mossru. Scinpl(! and i'liiiy said that the offici'-ils of the Waihi Company had cognisant of :! 'o formation, nf the En-ginc-d-i'.i!!---' ' ; v''>'!, and had i>a<i imnd in its formal ion. It was cleat ly their duty to prevent the format ion of a union in the )';:ee of tho existing agreement. They contended that the I local companies had broken the agreement in spirit, and were responsible for the present trouble. The union had kept its compact in eve-y wnv. j They hir!!»>r r-'-'tenderl that the Wnihi CVmpany ha<) aided and abetted tho formation of the union. Mr. S'."»"!i said that the union was in a minority, and that it tried to coerce a rvai-irity. FTo concluded that as far as they were concerned they were not going to doviV.t-o one inch.
