THE CHAMPION FLOUR VIEW.
The Champion Flour Co., whoso advertisement appears elsewhere, calls the attention of readers to the duty upon cereals imposed by the New Zealand tariff a>: compared with that of tin l Australian Commonwealth. Ours, it is pointed out, leaves the door practically open to outside competition. This etate of affairs, Champion Flour contends, is against the b'.st interests of tho country, particularly the workers. The point is raised that unk.is an adequate duty is placed upon .commodities which can bo raised in Xi-w Zealand, it may eventually result in the standard of living of those engaged in those industries being reduced to the lowest level or the industries in question killed. Tho killing of the ilourniilluig industry, it is shown, would mean the shrinkage of railway returns, thus necessitating increased rates to counterbalance that shrinkage. Free trade and eingkvkix are regarded as two evils which must bo shunned by tho people Sit all trots*
