ROXBURGH BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Roxburgh Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli). Also present were Crs T. Waigth, G. Jeffery, J. Martin, V. Henderson, G. Charlton, J. Gilchrist, P. Vercoe, and the clerk. An apology was received from Cr W. llauehton. The Mayor referred to the recent death of Mr L. E. Haines who was at one time a member of the Codicil. He then moved a motion of sympathy which was carried by those present standing in silence. J. A. Brown asked for information re the rating basis in the Borough and also objecting to his rates being excessive as compared with relation to other properties in the Borough.—To be advised that this was a matter not in the hands of the Council. Also that his objection should be made when the new valuation was got out. Mrs C. Gollop wrote in connection with the back wall at Uren’s shop and stating that in view of extending the wall in the future that the council allow the wall to stand as it as at present To be replied to stating that the Council had already advised her that the Council were prepared to leave the wall as it waSl provding' she entered into the agreement required by the council to protect itself. Provided Mrs Gollop gave the necessary agreement by Seotember 4 the council decided that the wall remain as it was for twelve months when the matter would be again considered but if no agreement was entered into by that date the council would then take steps to have the bylaw carried out. Palmerston North Borough Council advising that in connection with its golf links these were leased to the Golf Club. The council was 1 indemnified against any claim for any injury to any person or property. In May last a pedestrian on the street had been injured by a golf ball and the council had received a claim for damages which would be heard at the Supreme Court. When the case had been heard they would send on the decision to the Roxburgh Council.- —It was decided to write for further information as to what conditions the Palmerston Council held the lease of the reserve. Tenure and under what Act the reserve was held by the council to be asked for. In a discussion which took place on the question of the turfing of some of the sides of the main street the Mayor stated that if the council were prepared to have that part of the street done from Jeffery’s corner to the Methodist Church he was prepared to donate £lO towards the cost of same. He would be prepared to look after the turf in front of his residence and he was sure that other property owners would also be prepared to look after the fronts of their properties. On the motion of Crs Henderson and Charlton it was decided that the Works Committee go into the cost of having the street at this section tlurfed from the edge of the tar sealing back to the footpath on one side of the road. Accounts amounting to £4Bl 3s 3d were passed for payment.
