AN ENJOYABLE LATHERING. Following a day of strenuous business, the annual social of the various farmers’ organisations and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, held on Tuesday night in the Early Settlers’ Hall. A most enjoyable evening was spent, the large number present being given the opportunity to intermingle in friendly conversation and at times listen to a programme of musical and other interludes. The lion, Adam Hamilton (Postmaster - General and Acting Minister of Finance) was one of the visitors. After supper Mr Hamilton gave a short address on the Mortgage Corporation. Before the institution of the corporation, lie said, the mortgage system in New Zealand was not a wise one. It was a system of individual mortgages, in which the principle acted on was one of getting the best security possible for the mortgage. That was only natural, but tiny policy of the Mortgage Corpora-! lion would be to gather up all the | money possible at a low rate of. interest, and to lend it out again ; at a low rate of interest, thus rendering a service to the mortgagor. ‘‘l believe we are' starting a system that will have a great deal of influence for good in Now Zealand,” the Minister concluded. Short addresses were given by other speakers, including the new president of the Farmers’ Union (Mr 11. J. B. Smith) and the newly-elected president of the Women’s Division (Mrs J. Crawford Anderson). <
