Damage estimated at £IO,OOO was caused by a lire which gnt■ed the bacon deparluieni of the ''anlcrbury Frozen Meat Com!••any’s factory a t Del fast early ■his morning. The brigade had a hai'd fight to save Iho other departments. The fire was raging fiercely for over three hours, and it made a clean sweep of the centre block of the factory building, reducing the bacon curing packing and drying rooms to ruins. The bacon chiller and beef chiller were also destroyed. A volunteer brigade at the factory and the brigade from the central station, Christchurch, combined forces in a strenuous tight. Although nothing could be done to save the bacon factory they were successful in preventing the tire spreading to the other departments. The insurances on the building will cover the loss. The origin of the fire is unknown. The nightwatchman visited the block at 2.25 a.m., when all was then in order, but twenty minutes later flames were observed in the roof.
