NUMEROUS MO A BONES.
GUOJ > FIND IN U.M E STONE >’ CAVE. Nelson, April 20. Wink- prospecting in the Aluuut Arthur area, Air G. Fawcett, of Nelson, foil mi a number of new caves containing numerous moa , bones. Air Fawcett found the i skeletons of seven adult birds and two chickens, a.s well as several pieces of shell. lie slated that t he had nut explored the eaves thoroughly, but lie anticipated that there were many more bones on the Hour of the eaves. He added that he could detine the imprints of a foot. Several people declare that they have never seen bones so large as some of those which Air Fawcett has in his possession. At the back of .Mount Arthur on the tableh mis there is a mioeene limestoso formation at an altitude of between 3,000 ft and 4,000 ft. it was in this formation at about 3,500 ft that Air Fawcett discovered the ■eaves, some of which were large, j being a quarter of a mile in depth J and big enough in places to conj tain a large house. Five of the j ten caves located went right through spurs in the hills, daylight being seen from the inside at both entrances, in many parts of the caves debris has fallen from the top and covered some of the | moa bones.. Air Fawcett attributes j this to the effect of the 1919 carth- > quake.
