The first round of flag fixtures in Tuapcka concluded on Saturday last when Coal Creek defeated Lawrence and -Millers Flat won by default from .Roxburgh East. Lawrence, at Lawrence. May 31.—Creek v. Flat, at Flat. Lawrence v. East at Koxburgh. June 7.—Lawrence v. Creek, at Kox burgh. East v. Flat, at Flat COAL CREEK 8, v. LAWRENCE 3. The above teams met for the first time this season on the Recreation Ground, Lawrence, on Saturday, before a large attendance of spectators. The ground was a trifle greasy after the re- ’ cent rain,, but the day was au ideal one for the favourite winter pastime. : The result was a close win for Coal ! Creek, who played much bettor foot- | ball than the local team. The winners | appear to be a young team, all of an even height, i'netr display of footoaii was a bright one and showed that the 1 members must pay attention to training, as both in back and forward play the team work tu unison. Coal Creek kicked off and the play was in midfield for a short space of lime until the visitors’ forwards headed by Beaufort and Fleming, made au attack on Lawrence lino and, being backed up by good work from their rearguard, took the ball over the line and in a race for it D, Manuel drew first blood for Coal Greek, J. McPherson converting with a good kick, The visitors continued to attack strongly, the defence of the local players was ■ sound. J. McPherson had an attempt to convert a penalty, but tailed, and Jim Cavanagh ana Broad wore conspicuous in good play among the Lawrence backs, and Tubman and Wea derail among the forwards. Penalties were frequent and much line-kicking indulged in by both sides,, but no further score was recorded as the whistle went for half-time with Coal Creek attacking. The advantage of the spell to Lawrence was soon apparent, and their fort wards, led by Tubman and John Cavanagli, rushed play to Coal Creek quarters, and the ball going over the line saw Robertson, score, out James Cuv-a-uagn’s kick was charged down. The local forwards lor a wade were attacking hard but failed to break through the Coal Creek defence, Jackman being finely bowled over when making a dash for the line„ and J. McPherson relieved and his forwards, led by Gallop, Bayly and Beaufort, went three pans of ihe field in a combined rush, where play remained for a while until Tubman again led the Lawrence vanguard and the visitors, being penalised,, Cavanagh missed a chance to convert. The game continued, to be close with the forwards on both sides controlling the ball, and there were several stoppages for accidents. Lawrence were forced and shortly after when defending hard they were penalised and J- McPherson placed the ball across the bar and made the score 8 to 3 in favour of hi.- team. This proved to bo the final its despite strong efforts on both sides to add to their score during the last fifteen minutes of play the whistle went with Coal Creek winners as above stated. Mr L. Manuel, in the absence ••£ Mr J. George, who was unable to officiate, controlled the game as referee in an impartial manner, and with credit to both teams.
