The measure of assistance given Inpatients in the Auckland Mental Hospital on their discharge from the institution was the subject of an inquiry recently bv Mr F. G. Ewington, one of the official visitors. He was informed that it is the custom with the authorities to furnish a little money for any patient in need of the assistance, to enable him to obtain employment or to join friends or relatives. "I am hopeful," said Mr Ewington, discussing the matter subsequently, "that some kind person will leave a little money in trust for the purpose of relieving patients who are in impecunious circumstances when leaving the hospital. No more than £SO a year is required, so that a single bequest of £IOOO would establish a fund that would be a means by which valuable help could be given."
