PROTECTION OF MILLERS FLAT BRIDGE.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,- It appears, from your report of meting of Tuapeka Council that the District Engineer for Public Works Department recommends the addition of another span and the, substitution of a cylinder for the pile pier on western bank a- a remedy for the ment of the nwr upon the said bank. The public has a right to expect n more commons nse suggestion from an official holding the position of District Engineer foi' Public Works. Whatever is done must be with a view to prevent further encroachment and the suggestion referred to does not make provision for this. Fusther encroachment can only be prevented by deflecting the current and. directing it bv groynes towards the centre of the river. The most effective and at the same time the cheajKst groyne which could be put in to serve the required purpose, would be a short line (if bluejum piles with two or three old dredge elevator frames for a facing on their up-stream side. It is cheaper to remove the cause than to deal with the effect. Removing the cause in the manner suggested \ )v the writer would obviate further encroachment, and the ri er where it is now encroaching would ultimately shoal up.—l am, &c„ TRAVELLER.
