ROXBURGH SCHOOL.

ANNUAL BREAK-UP. The ceremonies in connection with the above event were held in the school on Thursday afternoon, December 21at. Besides the School Committee, there were present a goodly number of parents and friends. The proceedings opened with an action song being nicely rendered by the infant clasaw.

Dr. J. R. Gilmour, in presenting the prizes to the lower classes, said that they perhaps considered that to them this was the best day in the year, and that as the prizes they were to receive were good he hoped their holidays would also be good. The Rev. W. H. Abbey, who presented the prizes to Standard 111. andj IV. addressed the pupils brieflyt. He said that he was very pleas, i ed indeed to be present and that while congratulating the winners on their good work, he would like to remind them all that they had a duty to do, and that right through life there were prizes to be won which were worth working fcard for and, when having gained them, they could look back on the days of success with pleasure. The Rev. A. V. G. Chandler, before presenting the prizes to the higher classes addressed the children, complimenting them on the good work they had done durir- the year, and also making special reference to the splendid work done by them at the school concert on the previous evening, which he said reflected great credit not only on them but on their | teachers. He also referred to the school as a training ground for thelarger life afterwards. The samequal-| ities which had to be displayed at school had to be shown in alter life

thereby confirming the text taken from the best book of all " Whatsoever a man soweth so shall he reap. In concluding, the rev. gentleman requested the children to do their best during school days, to sow good seed so that in later years they might reap a' good harvest. i The prizes gained by the pupils of the school in the Navy League's essay | competition, particulars of which were published in our last issue, were pre- ! sented to the winners bv Br. J. R. Gilmour. i The head maater of the school (Mr Coutts) delivered a short address on the objects of the Navy League and also wished his pupils a Happy /Christ- j mas and Good New Year. | Mr Chandler called for three cheers for Mr Coutts and his teaching stajf which were heartily given. During the afternoon the children favoured those present with several part songs which were nicely render'ed. Before finally breaking up the children were treated to a plentiful I supply of sweets.
