Change in Southeast Asia Command
KANDY, NOV. 12. Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey will soon be relinquishing his post as General Officer Commanding, Malaya, to become Commander-iu-Chief of the Allied Land Forces in Southeast Asia (Alfsea), in succession to Lieutenant-General Sir William Slim, who is believed to have taken up an appointment in Europe. Major-General F. W. Messervy, commander of the Fourth Indian Corps, is succeeding Lieutenant-General Dempsey as General Officer Commanding, Malaya. Protesting in an editorial against the decisions to transfer to Singapore Seac and Alfsea from Kandy, and the Far East bureau of the Ministry of Information from New Delhi, the Straits Times says: “We should be guilty of hypocrisy if we offered them a warm welcome to this overcrowded city. Public opinion will be inclined to ask each of the three organisations: ’Was your journey really necessary?*
