Kairanga County

At the meeting of the Kairanga County Council yesterday,. Councillor W. R. Hopcroft presided over Councillors J. Hillas, E. W. Croucher, P. V. Koehler, M. G. Hansen, F. J. Russell, N. P. Neilsen, O. A. Collis.

Mr. L. C. Pickering, the council’s engineer, reported that the Lockwood drainage project could not be proceeded with, because it was impossible to obtain the necessary 30-inch pipes, which are not made locally. In the Taonui Riding there had been a heavy loss of stock in the recent floods, owing to the unpredicted rains. Many roads in the Taonui Basin were flooded, but no serious damage resulted other than loss of surface metal which has since been replaced. Tar patching on the LongburnRongotea Road and also the KairangaBunnythorpe Road was carried out, while kerbs and channels in Longbnrn township have been cleared. Further serious erosion at Stewart’s bend took place, and only a major scheme can now bo of any value to the area. Speaking of the Fitzherbert Riding, the engineer stated that the wet weather was responsible for a good deal of destruction, and the settlers in the area had stated that never before had they seen the Kahuterawa Stream rise so quickly or be so destructive. Further erosion had taken place at the end of Hewett’s Road, but it was more pronounced on private property above the road.. The Council decided to attend to the drain at Whakarongo School, at the request of the school authorities. The Clerk (Mr. N. I. Neilsen) reported that he had communicated with the authorities regarding the Council’s wish to take over control of the Stoney Creek road from Bunnythorpe to Kelvin Grove, but as yet there had been no reply. The Council decided to support the proposal of the Palmerston North Hospital Board to raise a loan of £45,000 for tho erection of a maternity hospital at Feilding. Tho report of the Health Inspector of the Kairanga district was received for

the quarter of July-September 1945, in which it was stated that there were 16 scarlet fever cases, two diphtheria cases and two dysentery cases. The financial statement was tabled, and showed a credit of £2607 10s 9d. The financial statement also disclosed that of £20,957 current rates struck, £/5G3 17s had been paid to date.
