Business Men’s Conclusion.
A question put to the organiser and treasurer of the Auckland Business Men’s Committee (Messrs. .T. T. Olive# and T. H. Maeky) by Mrs. G. C. Petersen at the women’s meeting called to further the appeal for funds to set up a chair of obstetrics in Auckland, was appreciated by the visitors. Mrs. Petersen said all would agree there was need for further research in obstetrics but she asked ‘‘Are you not letting the Government down lightly? Surely they could go a little further for women’s needs and set up centres!” The very foundation of the Social Security scheme depended on population, the speaker continued. Mr. Macky replied that the professor brought out must have the highest world standing recognised by the Royal College, London, and Nuffield Institute. It was only under the University of New Zealand, which was not under Government control, there would be that recognition and help, also knowledge passing from one to the other. The Government was providing the women’s hospital and equipment but the hard-headed business men were convinced the professor must be free from the changing field of politics.
