Saturday’s Cup Trial
A great trial over a mile and a quarter by the New Zealand Cup horses, Broiefield and Langue d’Or, seven furlongs by Dileas and Tremello, six furlongs by Tbeiolyn and Theolateral, four by Controller, and three by the Welcome Stakes filly, Indira, were the ■tar items of a very interesting programme at Awapuni on Saturday when the going was better than it had' been for months. The flags were thirty feet out on the course proper but the Cup horses and Indira galloped against the rails. Broiefield and Langue d’Or. Broiefield was ridden by G. R. Tattersail and .Langue d’Or by W. J. Stevens and the pace was right on from the start. They ran to the mile in 27 2-5, the first three in 40 2-5, the first six in 1.20 3-5 and the first seven in 1.34 2-5. They were against the wind for the last three but the pace was increased and neither looked like stopping and they finished together full of running. They covered the full distance in 2.14 1- the last mile in 1.46 4-5, the last seven in 1.33 4-5, last six in 1.20 1-5, last five in 1.6 3-s—which was on a par with the best of the morning over the distance—and the last three brilliantly in 39 4-5. it was a grand gallop and both horses looked as fresh as new paint when they pulled up. Dileas and Tremello. Dileas (D. Amey) and Tremello (Tattersali) began smoothly from the seven furlong barrier and they wasted no time down the back stretch, covering the first three in 3S and the first ha|f mile in 51 2-5. The pace was not maintained against the wind but from the three, and covering more ground than the Cup horses, they were home in 41 to complete in 1.32 2-5. It was one of the best sevens at Awapuni for a long time and they were going well within themselves at the finish after having covered the last five in 1.6 3-5. Theiolyn and Theolateral. Theiolya (A. S. Ewan) went away brilliantly from the six furlong barrier, eovering the first three in 37 3-5. He was home easily in 41 3-5 to complete in JLIB 3-5. He should be in splendid order for Biccarton. Theolateral (H. Pearce) started away from the same mark and he travelled deceptively. He covered the first three in 37 and the last three in 41 1-5 and he finished smoothly in 1.18 1-5. Omahina was keen to go when record- ( iag JL6 4-5 for five. Bay Kobe (hiicholls) and Don Mac (Tattersali), from the same stable, were together and going easily at the end of seven run in L 36. Controller (M. Andrews) went away fast from the seven furlong barrier and travelling brilliantly down the back stretch he covered the first three in 36 2- and four in 50 2-5. He was eased after running five in about 1.4 3-5. Indira (.Tattersali) was let off with three furlongs against the rails. She has been working well and on Saturday she covered the three untroubled in 36 3Swift Jay (Amey) is one of the best track workers at Awapuni.
