Good Support for Paddy’s Market

There was great activity in the Orange Hall yesterday when members of the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a very successful Paddy’s Market with stalls stocked with goods which found ready' sale. Returns from the stalls, with competitions and donations brought in over £27 which was considered most gratifying. Tho stalls and stallholders were as follow:—Produce, Mesdames Clausen, H. McFarlane, and Crawford; arts and crafts, Mesdames Tomlinson, Muir and Lovelock; cooking, Mesdames J. MacMahon, Gilchrist and Seymour; afternoon tea, Mesdames Polglase and MacFarlane Senr., and the Misses Stewart; competitions, Mrs. Eglinton. Prior to the opening of the Paddy’s market a short business meeting was held Mrs. W. F. Field in the chair. A circular from headquarters regarding the financial position was considered, the president pointing out the calls on headquarters particularly for the three rest homes which were run for the benefit of all country women. It was agreed to send a donation of £5 to the Rest Home Fund and to forward the affiliation fees immediately. Suggestions had been solicited for a suitable celebration to mark the coming-of-age of the Division next year, Mrs. Field intimating that one suggestion had been the establishment of a bursary to train women for help in the country. Wellington ,Central Provincial had suggested a project for beautifying the countryside while yet another suggestion had been the holding of big individual efforts by each branch this being favoured by the meeting. Information regarding the early history of the movement, which is to be compiled into a Christmas booklet, was also solicited. A special plea was made for comforts for British soldiers in the Palmerston North Hospital and it was further agreed to donate £2 2s for Christmas cheer. Mesdames E. Brown (Palmerston North), 11. M. Boyce (Glen Oroua) and W. Gosling (Aokautere) were elected new members. Final arrangements for the Christmas party were left in the hands of the committee. Before adjourning Mrs. Field thanked members for arrangements made for the sale and also voiced appreciation of the generous contributions sent in.
