Salvation Army Flower Show
The flower show sponsored by the Salvation Army and run in conjunction with their sale of work was a decided success. Brighter weather had encouraged better blooms and in one class (iris) there were 18 entries. Iceland poppies were also popular, 16 entries being staged. The decorative classes were also well filled and the stands looked very gay and colourful. Show secretaries were Miss C. Lagor and Mrs. T. A. B. Sinclair with Mr. G. Goldsack and Mrs. Allott as stewards. Judges were Mrs. Foster (Napier) and Mr. S. Turnbull (Woodville). The stalls were all well filled and business was brisk, particuarly at the cake stall. A sponge cake competition was contested by 10 competitors, Mrs. J. Jackson (Hopelands) being the winner with Mrs. B. Jackson (Hopelands) 2, and Mrs. J. Richards (Woodville) 3. The cake stall holders were Mesdames J. Jackson, H. Peterson and 11. Hammond, Jnr.; sewing stall, H. Mills and Carrington; produce stall, Mesdames Allott and S. Goldsack; novelty stall, Mrs. Captain Home; oddment stall, Mesdames Benge and Linton; sweets, Miss L. Mills; tea rooms, Mesdames G. Goldsack, J. Eichards, Beid, Pallant and War nock. Prior to declaring tho show open, the Mayor, who was introduced by Captain Home, announced the items of a short and enjoyable programme which opened with the W.I. Glee Singers under the baton of Mrs. J. McCormick with Mrs. Galbraith, pianiste. Further items were:—lllocutionary items, Mrs. pianoforte solo, Mrs. W. Galbraith; vocal solos, Mrs. T. Smith accompanied by Mrs. Galbraith; whistling solos, Mrs. H. McNeil with gramophone accompaniment. The final item by the W.I. Drama Circle members was well received those taking part being Mrs. W. laulkner and Misses Cross and Kirkpatrick.
