Mass Vaccination Against Influenza
DEFINITE DEGREE OF PROTECTION OFFERED. Received Thursday 9.50 p.m. WASHINGTON, Nov. 7. An army surgeon-general spokesman, announcing that a new influenza vaccine will be administered to 7,000,000 troops within the next few weeks in the greatest mass vaccination against influenza ever attempted, said the vaccine offered a definite degree of protection against the two common types of influenza, which were the main causes of the disease encountered in recent years. At present it was net known whether it was these or some other type which had caused the worldwide epidemic of 1918-19. He added that tests during the war showed that the vaccine reduced the incidence of influenza hy 76 per cent among vaccinated persons compared with unvaccinated ones, both of whom had previously been exposed to the disease virus. It was further found that the disease was milder and of shorter duration among those vaccinated who did get sick. The new vaccine is prepared from “killed” viruses of the two common types of influenza it seeks to prevent.
