Manawatu Heads
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Cattle wandering over sections that owners haven’t had time to fence are a real nuisance at the beach. In some cases trees have been destroyed. People are wondering if the owners of stock down here have grazing rights, or if the animals should not be here at all. Applications were called for a ranger recently for the Foxton district, but as far as the beach is concerned, he has been conspicuous by his absence. The death of Mrs. Graham’s small daughter was a shock to everyone, and much sympathy is felt for tho parents, and also for Mr. and Mrs. Chaffey in the loss of their only granddaughter. Mrs. Reid of Seabury Avenue has been suffering severely from sciatica, and is still confined to the house. Mr. Wilkinson of Feilding, who has recently settled at the beach, is taking an interest in restarting the Foxton band, and a suggestion has been mado that the beach take over the band for its own and Foxton’s benefit. On Friday evening members of the wartime Nursing Division, now in recess, gathered at the residence of Sister M. Little, Seabury Avenue, to entertain Miss P. Booth at a social evening in view of her approaching marriage. A pleasant time was spent with games and competitions and Mrs. T. Crotty presented the guest of tho evening with a token of esteem, and conveyed the good wishes of members. Miss Booth suitably acknowldged the presentation and felicitations of those present. A suggestion that the owners of dead carcases that periodically litter the beach waterfronts, should be traced through stock brands will commend itself to all intelligent persons. The Foxton Harbour Board has now appointed a man to dispose of these dead animals promptly, and it is felt that the owners should stand the cost. The opinion held generally is that the Manawatu River is being chosen as a cheap burial-ground.
