Women’s Institutes

WHAKARONGO There was a good attendance at the August moeting presided over by Mrs. Eagle. The meeting was held in the evening and was open to everyone as , well as to members and friends. One ' new member, Mrs. L. G. Morris, was welcomed. Soldiers’ parcels this montti are to be packed by Mesdamcs Johanson and McLeavey. Mrs. Uhrbom was welcomed back to the meeting after an absence of several months owing to illness. Competitions resulted: Cluster, Mesdames Wood 1, Oxenham and Johanson 2, Smith and Wilkinson 3; bloom, Mesdames Henricksen 1, Smith 2; something new from something old, Mesdames Green 1, Henricksen 2, McLeavey 3; leeks, Mesdames Archer 1, Smith 2, Wood 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Oxenham, Archer and Pederson. The remainder of the evening was tilled with items as follows: Guitar duet by Messrs Greatorex and S. Edwards; song, Mrs. Coupe, accompanied by Mrs. Greatorex; vocal duets, Mesdames Morris and Frith, Mesdames Lacey and Dawson; dance, Miss Hendorson; elocution, Ivan Henaghan; song and dance, Misses Henderson; violin solo, Miss B. Bennett, accompanied by Miss M. Archer. The concluding item, which was greatly enjoyed, was a play by members of the drama club, those taking part being Mesdames Morris, Frith, Misses C. Vautier, B. Robinson, and C. Wood. The plsry was produced by Miss C. Vautier. The musical accompaniments were played by Mrs.' Lacey. KELVIN GROVE Mrs. Shepherd presided at the August meeting and welcomed Mrs. Newdick, a former resident of Kelvin Grove, as a visitor. Mrs. Gardner, of the Te Arakura Institute, who now resides at Kelvin, Grove, was welcomed as a new member and enrolled. The secretary read a letter from a serviceman, Mr. J. Stuart. Mrs. Grayson, who has been ill in hospital, was welcomed back. Each member donated cash for the Food for Britain Fund. A competition, introduced by Miss M. Parker, was won by Mrs. Sollitt and Mrs. Williams. Miss I. Rees delighted members with two solos, as did Mrs. Ryan. The hostesses for September are Mesdajmes Vile and W. Parker and the competition is for a jam jar of flowers and foliage. Mrs. Sollitt donated a gift from Italy which was won by little Betty Lewis. Competitions results: Single flower, Mrs. Oreahen 1, Mrs. Radomski 2, Mrs. Callahan 3; cluster, Mrs. Vile 1, Mrs. Radomski 2, Mrs. Maybe 3; apron patchwork, Mrs. Callahan 1, Mrs. Anderson 2, Miss Parker 3. LONGBURN. Mrs. Pierard presided over an excellent attendance in August, A special welcome was extended tp Mrs. W. Stephenson. Mrs. McMillan was proposed and accepted as a new member. Members were appealed to to save mutton fat for Europe and wool for the Red Cross. There was a good response to the collection for the Leper fund which realised £1 14s 9d. Parcels drawn for this month go to C. Bevens and Thompson. Mrs. Holland gave a demonstration on the making of wool mops and Mrs. Pierard on wool tea cosies. The novelty competition donated by Mrs, Wasley was won by Mrs. Fletcher. Competitions judged by Mrs. L. Hodgson and Mrs. Cave Nicol resulted: Cooking: Mrs. Holland 1, Mrs. Fawcett 2; handwork patchwork article: Mrs. Pierard 1, Mrs. McDonald 2, Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Wickens equal 3; blooms (small): Mrs. Fawcett 1, Mrs. Cooksley 2, Mrs. Freeman 3; large: Mrs. Cooksley 1, Mrs. Fawcett 2, Mrs. C. Hills 3. Mesdames Fletcher, Freeman and Frances were hostesses. Competitions for next month will be smocked article, billy loaf, large and small blooms. Hostesses will be Mesdames Hills, Holland and Hodgson. SANSON Competitions of the evening at the August meeting were: Specimen bloom, Mrs. Coulter 1, Mrs. McKay 2, Mesdames Young, O’Regan and Richards (equal) 3; peggy squares, Mrs. P. O’Regan 1, Mrs. B. Young 2, Mrs. McKay 3. Over 240 new and repaired garments were collected by the institute members and sent to headquarters in response to the Unrra appeal. A further collection of valuable proportions was made by the Sanson and Waitoni schools and sent to the institute to be looked over and forwarded. Parcels for the local boys overseas are to be packed on Wednesday at Mrs. A. K. Drew’s residence. A flannel shirt to fit a boy of eight years was bought by the members to be forwarded to the Polish Camp. For the September meeting the following competitions will be held: Specimen bloom, as usual; sultana scones, 21b. sprup tin of spring flowers, and a crochet medallion. The judge for the latter competition will be Mrs. McKay, who at the August meeting demonstrated to an appreciative gathering the art of making crochet medallions. The hostesses for this meeting will be Mesdames J. Bowatcr and P. O ’Regan.

KUMEROA-HOPELANDS At the August meeting Mrs. W. Miller, in the absence of the president, Mrs. O’Neil, presided over a good attendance. Before the meeting commenced members stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mrs. Mclntyre, who has recently suffered a bereavement. Letters were read from soldiers overseas for parcels received. A boy’s shirt and vest has been purchased and forwarded to the Polish Camp at Pahiatua. A competition arranged by Miss Lynch was won by Mrs. Jeffares. Another competition was won by Miss B. Sinclair. Next month is to be the spring flower show, and it is hoped to get the services of Miss Kirkpatrick, of Woodvillo, to give a demonstration on floral work. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mrs. O’Neil 1, Mrs. Eades 2; ‘float bowl, Mrs. Norman 1, Miss Lynch 2. Hostesses were Mesdames Sinclair and Beatson. KAIR AN G A There was a record attendance at the Kairanga Hall on Wednesday night for celebration of the 13th birthday of the Kairanga Women’s Institute, visitors being present from far and near. After officially welcoming all present Mrs. Hockly (president) called for cheers and a special -welcome to all returned servicemen. The evening was taken up with dancing intersnersed with items bv the Kairanga Choir and a short sketch entitled ” Waiting for the Train” produced by Mrs. G. Mitchell, the olavers being Mesdames L. Parsons. E. Saunders. A. Divehall and Messrs. L. Clark, M. Eagles, K. Prouse and Judv Burmeister. Mrs. McClelland presented Mrs. Hockly with a shoulder so ray, Mrs. Hockly then presenting sprays to the following: Mrs. McClelland (Manawatu Federation president), Mrs ChUds (Manawatu executive), Mrs Divehall (choir leader), Mrs Turner fnianist), Mrs. G. Mitchell (play producer) and visiting Institute members, Mesdames Childs, Lewis. Terry. Healey,

and Nicol, who assisted in the ceremony of cutting the birthday cake made by Mrs. O. Ilollis and iced by Mrs.

L. Clark. Mr. A. Williams acted as M. TlJbre was a good attendance at the August meeting, Mrs. Hockly presiding. A special welcome was extended to Mrs. Pedersen, a former member who has returned to the district and to Mrs. P. Cohr, who has been absent some time through illness. Birthday tokens were presented to Mesdamos J. Burmeister, L. Clark, P. Cohr, E. Saunders W. McClelland and Misses B. Doherty and D. Mildon. Mrs. McClelland, president of Manawatu Federation presented Mrs. G. Davey with a long-service badge, which has been well earned over a considerable number of years, members according her musical honours. Letters of thanks were received from J. Passey, J. Wall and C. Gilmour for parcels received. Members were reminded of the following appeals:—Clothes for Polish children, padded squares for Ited Cross quilt and donations for Christmas parcel for lepers, all to be brought to next meeting, and donations of mutton-fat and raw wool, to be sent to Abraham & Williams, between August S and 16. It was decided to donate the usual £1 Is to the leper appeal also. Correspondence was received concerning Mauawatu drama festival, a proposod rest room for Institute members in Palmerston North, a proposed young women's club movement and invitations to Kauwhata, Tiakitahuna, Bunnythorpe and Milson Institutes birthdays. A roll call “My Ideal Husband” was both amusing and enlightening. Mrs. McClelland gave a short report on matters from the Dominion Council which she has recently attended as Manawatu delegate. The demonstrator for the afternoon was Mrs. Childs of Milson Institute who gave an interesting demonstration on the making of wool mops which was followed with interest, Mrs. Adlarn passing the vote of thanks. Competitions resulted: Violets, Mrs. C. Turner 1, L. Clark 2, R. Mitchell 3; shoulder spray, Mrs. Prouse I, Mrs. McClelland 2, Mrs. Kilgour 3; cluster, Mrs. C. Turner 1, Mrs. Kilgour 2, Mrs. G. Davey 3, Programme for September will be musical afternoon, golden thread talk on music, best darned sock to be done at meeting, spring bulb, cluster; hostesses Mesdames J. Burmeister, Bacon, Divehall, Jonsen.
