How Palmerston North Will Celebrate

Programmes for two days of victory celebration have been drawn up for Palmersten North, full details of which are advertised in this issue. It has been decided that the celebrations will go nliead on the day the news of victory is announced, only if it is received by 8 a.m. If the news comes to hand after 8 a.m., the programme will be carried out on the following day. On the first day there will be church services—9.3o a.m. in the suburban churches so as to give people time to get to the Square for the procession at 11 a.m., and in the more central churches at 10 a.m. The procession will assemble in Church Street by the Opera House and is due to move off at II a.m. and finish at the Band Rotunda in the Square for a Thanksgiving service which will be shorter than the o*e held on VE dav, in view of a further thanksgiving ser-

vice to be held in the Opera House at 2.30 p.m. with the overflow in St. Andrew’s Church. A feature of this service will be the combined choirs under Mr. J. Holmes Runniclej;. Organisations taking part in the procession are asked to familiarise themselves with the order of march, and points of assembling as set out in an advertisement. On the evening of the first dav’a celebrations there will be band music, community singing and dancing in the Square, right up till midnight. The Scouts and Guides have a programme of their own, particulars of which are also advertised.

A carnival programme lias been arranged for the second day of the celebrations. An enthusiastic meeting of the Employers’ Association and kindred organisations including bakers, grocers, furniture traders, merchants, carriers and commercial travellers, was held yesterday for the purpose of co-operu-4ing with the Mayor and City Council and it was decided to hold a procession of decorated vehicles, lorries, cars, etc., in the afternoon. An invitation is extended to all business firms, sports clubs, trades unions and other organised groups, to participate. An invitation is also extended to anyone who has a vehicle which he or she can decorate, to join in the procession. A limited number of lorries will be available for organised groups to decorate for the occasion. Persons wishing to participate are requested to contact Mr. W. M. Sexton at the P.D.C., or Mr. F. H. Blatchford (secretary of the Employers’ Association) or Mr. W. J.. Macpherson, president of the Retailers * Association, before noon to-day.
