Longburn

The weekly euchre held to raise funds for the hall was well attended, winners were Mrs. J. Martin and Graham Pear* son. There was an excellent attendance of players at the Boy Scout’s hut, where a euchre tournament was held to raise funds for the Girl Guides, winners being Mrs Freeman, Mr. Hill and Mr. T. Cooksley. Consolation prize went to Mrs. J. Ware and Mr. C. Palmer. Mr. F. Brown presided at the school committee meeting. All members and schoolmaster (Mr. Wimsett) were present. It was decided to hold the school ball on Thursday, 16th inst. Considerable thought was given to whether the ball should be plain or fancy dress, it being decided that it be plain this year. Fndeavours are to be made for fancy dresses next year. The contract has been let for draining and relaying the tennis courts which will be ready for play immediately after the term holidays. The infant mistress (Miss Corby) has resigned to take up a position at the Intermediate School, Miss le Coutuer, of Whakarongo, bei hg appointed to fill the position. Arbor Day is on Monday the 13th inst and the committee decided to plant flowering shrubs under the cherry blossoms that flank the drive. Mrs. 8. Howard is visiting friends in Christchurch. Private John Holland is home on leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O Holland, Main Road. Mr. F. Brown had the misfortune to accidentally fall and in saving himself put flia arm through a window pane, * cutting it rather severely. His friends will be pleased to hear he is making rapid progress to recovery from his accident.

The monthly meeting of the Girl Guides committee was held at the home of Mrs. Colin Francis. It was noted with regret that Miss C. Corby, Girl Guide captain and infant mistress of the school, had received notice of transfer to the Intermediate School in Palmerston North and had sent in her resignation as captain. This has been accepted and it is hoped that a new Guide captain can soon be obtained. Mrs Francis served supper.
