Humanitarian Work
With the object of furthering local interest in the New Zealand branch of tho League of Nations Union, Mrs. Enid Roberts, wife of the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. B. Roberts, together with Mrs. M. Stables, J.P., representative of the English League, on Wednesday visited Pahiatua. It was felt, said Mrs. Roberts, that now was the time to arouse interest in the new organisation, one which would take tho place of the League of Nations. It had been recognised that in wartime so many organisations were in operation that it was not considered fair that a branch should be re-estab-lished in Pahiatua. However, a district branch for the North Wairarapa was established in Masterton and it was hoped that members would enrol from Pahiatua.. Because of the natural association of ideas among people, the name of the League of Nations was regarded as a failure and proposals had been put forward that the name of the new organisation be changed. It woul 1 probably finally become the New Zealand Branch of the United Nations’ Association. As to the funds of the organisation which were obtained mainly from public subscription, any money which remained after the payment of dues was devoted to humanitarian work in the work of child welfare. About £25 had been collected and sent away for the purpose. It was impossible, said Mrs. Roberts, ,to B let the United Nations Charter pass without some recognition. Everyone had to do their portion towards establishing a just and lasting peace and to this end everyone would have to become internationally minded. Its operations in the future would depend more upon the spirit of the people than anything els* >
