Grave Misgiving Over Europe’s Food Outlook
Received Friday, 9.45 p.m. LONDON, August 10. The entire outlook for the world food position, particularly in the 1945-46 crop year, could only be viewed with grave misgiving, the Unrra council meeting was told in a report from the Combined Food Board. The report emphasises the shortage of sugar which is described as the most critical since the outbreak of war. It should be possible to meet all human needs for wheat provided inland transportation and ocean shipping could be overcome. To meet the biggest problem, the expansion of production would be a long process. Fats and rice would be in short supply until the Far East is liberated and rehabilitated. Supplies of dairy products would be limited.
