Reviving Communist Party in Germany
LONDON, July 2. A new German youth organisation to imdo the work of the Hitler Youth Movement was called for by the leader of the Communist Party (Walter Ulbricht) in a broadcast from Berlin. Addressing the first party conference held by the Berlin Communists, Herr Ulbricht made the first direct appeal from Berlin to Communists and Social Democrats throughout Germany and forecast a union of the two parties. “We have confidence in Germany’s youth and believe that with the help of anti-Fascists they will learn a lesson from the disaster Hitler brought on our country,’’ he said. “We shall ask the occupying authorities for permission to establish youth committees which will educate German youth in the new spirit and inspire them to help in cleansing Germany. We want to appoint young people t:> work these committees, because re-education is possible only if young anti-Fascists guide our youth so that German youth ultimately will create their own united free youth movement. ’ ’
Herr Ulbricht also gave instructions for the Communist Party’s recruiting campaign, the object of which is to build up a new organisation composed of old party militants and young Communists who have proved their mettle in the underground struggle.
