The Times. THURSDAY, JULY 5, 1645. Britain’s General Election
To-day is polling day in Britain for the first general election to be held ill almost ten years. Due to three weeks being allowed for the return of service votes from all quarters of the globe, the outcome of this election will not be known until July 26. The election is one of deepest concern to New Zealand, second only in consequence to our own general election. Forecasts on the outcome vary considerably and are doubtless influenced by partisanship, but even so there is a general agreement that the Conservative Party headed by Britain’s great leader, Winston Churchill, will secure a mandate to carry on. The Churchill mana must be a powerful infiijeiice and largely a predominant one with British electors. The worth of that may be gauged from the outcome of the presidential elections in .America last November when President Roosevelt was re-elected in spite of his being obviously a sick man and against a strongly rising Republican tide. Personality proved stronger than party. The consequence of the British general election to the people of New Zealand derives from the fact that the fortunes of this Dominion are more closely linked with those of Britain than with perhaps any other two nations jointly. The Government to be elected at Home will set the shape of things to come for the next five years. The policies it follows will largely determine the prosperity and general wellbeing of New Zealanders. This applies in matters of trade" directly on our economy. The influence of the British Government will also bear greatly upon the kind of world in which we will live as regards international relationships. Whoever’ wins the election will assume a responsibility of the greatest magnitude upon which so much will depend, not only for the people of Britain but for those of many other lands.
