Southdown Dispersal Sale

Dalgety and Company Limited in conjunction with Wright Stephenson and Company Limited, report on the sale held at the Feilding Showgrounds on account of J. B. Bradley, Esq., Sanson, when his complete flock of 952 Southdowns comprising 140 shearling ewes, 450 2-shear to 5-shear ewes, 190 ewe lambs, 105 ram lambs aud five stud sires were submitted to a good attendance of buyers from the Auckland, Opotiki, Waikato, King Country, Taranaki, Wanganui, Hawke’s B«ay, Wairarapa and surrounding districts. This flock was founded in 1924 by the purchase of top ewes from the flock of Alessrs Henson Bros., and “Pariroa” flock. In the early part, prize winning sires from the famous “Ivilleymoon” stud were used, and from 1934 onwards only imported sires, or sons of imported sires, have" been used in the stud. The flock came forward in first-class order and condition; they were of strong constitution, and of excellent type and quality, and undoubtedly were a first-class line. Considering the number of Southdown flocks recently disposed of in this district, competition was steady throughout tho auction and we report a total clearance at highly satisfactory prices; the purchasing power was well spread, consignments going to all parts of the North Island. The sale opened on the 4-shear owes which met with a particularly keen demand, the top pens selling to 25 guineas and averaging the excellent price of 9 guineas. Three-shear ewes averaged £6 16s; 2-sliear, £6 8s 6d; 1-shear, £5 Is; aged, £5 ss; ewe lambs, £2 8s 9d. As was anticipated, the ram lambs met with spirited competition, the tops selling to 10 guineas, tho line averaging £7 11s. In the sale of the five stud rams the top price was secured for “Aberdeen AI 17/42,” which was first prize winner at tho Christchurch Show, 1944, and realised 110 guineas; “Punchbowl X 21/43” realised 70 guineas, the five averaging £54 325.
