Carpentry Centre for Returned Men

NEW REHABILITATION PROJECT IN THE CITY A new development in rehabilitation activities in Palmerston North is the opening of a carpentry centre in Alaire Street Avliere operations will begin on Wednesday, July 4. When the centre opens it will haAe a roll of ].{ made up as follows:—He\en froin Palmerston North, three from Feilding and one each from Shannon, Dunnevirke and Wanganui. The term of training is two vents begin every four months. The scheme provides that the men will spend the first four months doing mainly theoretical work at the Mai re Street centre under the super\isiou of the recent lyappointed instructor (Air. J. J. halter lof Wellington). They will then do* practical work outside on lo< a! htate housing projects. For the first eight months they will be paid £3 os a week plus separation allowance of 30s a week and family benefits for zuarriod mea if they arc eligible for these special allowftuces. During the third fourmonthly period they will be paid £» 7s 6d a week, and after completion of the first year of training they wilt receive aAvard wages. Before enrolment the men are requested to sign a contract that they will undergo training for two years and that they will stay in the industry for another three years. Work is proceeding on tlie job of transforming the Maire (Street building. which formerly wai a garage, Late a training centre. The Chief Instructor of Carpentry Centres (Mr. K. W. Fraser, of Wellington) has been visiting Palmeiston North to assist the inauguration of the new centre. Carpentry centres will also be opened next month in Wanganui and New Plymouth.
