Feilding Patriotic Society
The 1945 Patriotic Fund appeal in Feilding was launched at a meeting of the general committee of the Feilding Patriotic Society on Wednesday evening, the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) presiding. There were also present Messrs C. H. Tate, H. J. Dewc, H. T. Simonds, T. Collins, A. C. Buist, T. Donaldson, F. J. Allen, O. C. Sporle, P. G. Guy, C. B. McClure, K. Thompson, K. M. Little (secretary), Mesdames A. C. McOorkindale, R. E. Seddon (Mayoress), E. Scott, W. Moorman, J. Darragh, J. 11. Mason, T. Donaldson, Do Lacy and Miss Y. James. The chairman reviewed the requirements of the National Patriotic Fund Board and the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council for the current patriotic year. The provincial budget provided for a totai of £149,050 of which zone E (Feilding district) was to find £12,870. Feilding’s quota was £2BBO, compared with £3OOO called for last year and £3992 actually subscribed. The Mayor pointed to the fact that the sum required from residents of the Borough this year was less than that last year and Jio anticipated that this would be readily forthcoming. The patriotic work hud to go on £o? there was still a call for amenities for our troops, airmen and those serving in the Navy and merchant marine. Mr. Allen reported that the Feilding R.fcJ.A. had agreed to again conduct the liousc-to-housc canvas to assist in raising the town’s quota. The chairman expressed his pleasure at this announcement, saying that the committee was most grateful to the R.S.A. for its splendid help. Mr. Collins supported the Mayor and the meeting resolved to accept the offer. It is expected that the town canvas Avill be undertaken before May 20th. All publicity in connection with the campaign was left to the publicity committee while Mr. Wiinonds on behalf of Messrs Cobbe and Co. stated that he would arrange for a special window display. For the women's patriotic committee Mrs. McCorkindale stated that a roster for the conduct of patriotic shop days for the year had been prepared and the women were quite ready to go ahead. (Special weeks would be held for the Army, Navy and Air Force as before, and all details were in hand. Mr. Tate presented a financial report which set out that for the current appeal a sum of £1157-15-6 was already in hand, made up of donations and shop days including a balance carried forward. This sum also included credits due on account of the sale of Victory art union tickets and a sum of just over £3OO due on account of parcels. The saleyards tearooms had returned a sum of £79 and the women in charge were doing good work. It was agreed to constitute the junior section as a sub-committee to enable members to obtain some freedom oi action subject to general control by the executive. Mr. Thompson said that the junior section had in mind the holding of a patriotic dance on May 24th to help the patriotic fund appeal and this was approved of subject to any .variation due to the war situation. The chairman referred to a circular received by the Lady Galway Guild relative to the collection of clothing for refugees in England. The circular emphasised that this activity of the Guild was still of the utmost importance for clothing was urgently needed and it was hoped that the good work would continue. Mrs. McCorkindale, reporting on the ■work of the knitting sections, stated that the army section had made 1555 articles, the Air Force section 980, and the Navy section 1054 articles, since commencing. Many letters of appreciation had boon received acknowledging these comforts.
